Gary Oldman was originally supposed to be cast, but was replaced by Kevin Kline
Tale
The series follows Catherine Ravenscroft, a television documentary journalist whose job is to expose the transgressions of long-respected institutions. In several episodes, Jonathon uses the same lens throughout the series, a medium-length telephoto lens. Such a lens would not be able to focus on subjects in close-ups, such as selfies with Sasha or in the bedroom with Catherine.
Ultimately, it’s a story of revenge
Damn! I wasn’t aware of the experience I was in for when I started watching this limited AppleTV+ series starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline. “Disclaimer” is based on a novel of the same name by Renée Knight, and was written for the screen and directed by Alfonso Cuarón.
Blanchett, as always, is fantastic here and Kline also gives a solid performance
Blanchett plays Catherine, a journalist whose secrets from her past resurface in alarming ways, pushing her to confront that past that wreaks havoc on her entire life. It was a masterfully told story, taking us on a fascinating journey of discovery as the audience learns (sometimes in vivid detail) the “events” of Catherine’s past. It was surprising to see Sacha Baron Cohen in a more serious role, but he did it justice.
But damn, am I glad I stuck around
Despite some minor flaws, I recommend this series if you like character dramas with a bit of added tension/plot. Note: There are some pretty graphic depictions of sex/intimacy shown in several episodes. It’s not action-packed and it took me about half an episode (around 30 minutes) before I finally got “hooked” on the story.
